RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
